The Munich Accord is a commitment among social media platforms to detect and combat artificial intelligence-generated “deceptive” election content, conscious of the participation that it requires from national governments and elected leaders committed to the rule of law. The Indian trajectory has been one of eliciting compliance from tech companies and social media platforms through a regulatory regime based on existing laws, executive orders and advisories. It makes social media companies and platforms responsible for compliance under the threat of losing safe harbour protection under the Information Technology Act.
